In 1973, the citizens of Harlan County, Kentucky stood together to demand better wages, safer working conditions, and health benefits for the town's coal miners. They were met with violence at the hands of hired company thugs. The film's crew spent years with the miners and their families, even capturing footage of strikers being shot at. In one miner's words, "The cameras probably saved a bunch of shooting. I don't think we'd have won it without the film crew. If the film crew hadn't been sympathetic to our cause, we would've lost. Thank God for them; thank God they're on our side."
